According to Google, there are nearly 900 monthly searches for geriatricians in Charlotte, NC. It’s clear that as we age, receiving excellent care and oversight from a physician you trust is an important factor in staying healthy.
In this blog post, we’ve compiled a working list of top geriatricians in Charlotte, NC based on our research. If you know any local geriatricians you’d like to add to the post, let us know and we’re happy to make adjustments.
What is a Geriatrician?
Many people don’t understand what geriatricians do. And, some older adults think they need a referral to see one. Geriatricians are simply primary care doctors who specialize in treating older adults, particularly those over the age of 65.
Geriatricians have the same amount of training as a primary care doctor, but often have an additional year or two of specialized geriatric education and training. One of the reasons for this specialized training is because older adults often have more medical concerns and conditions to manage than younger adults.
On top of having more chronic medical conditions to manage, older adults need specialized oversight and care when it comes to their cognitive and behavioral health needs. Patients working with geriatricians can expect clinicians to also help them address and identify health issues related to mobility and medication management. Geriatricians also provide counseling on palliative and end-of-life care issues.
How Do We Rank Geriatricians?
As part of our service at CarePods, we help clients better manage their health. In many cases, that requires us to attend doctor appointments and to communicate with our client’s treating physicians.
Over time, we’ve made notes on the techniques and practices that top geriatricians use and incorporated that information into online searches for local geriatricians in Charlotte. Below, we’ve listed the top three offices in Charlotte serving geriatric patients. We identified these offices using an online search based on the following criteria:
- Quantity and quality of patient reviews
- Accessibility of the Geriatrician’s office
- Client reviews referencing good listening and consultation skills
- Integration with local, large health systems such as Novant Health and Atrium Health

#1 – Oak Street Health, East Charlotte
Address: 6824 Harrisburg Rd., Charlotte, NC 28227
Oak Street Health is a quickly-growing, publicly-traded primary care practice dedicated to serving senior adults on Medicare. The East Charlotte location has excellent reviews, coming in just shy of our #2 finisher with a 4.3 out of 5-star rating. The practice specializes in serving older adults on managed care insurance programs but also serves Fee-For-Service patients with traditional Medicare and Medicare Advantage plans.
The office is located off an easy-to-access street with ample parking. Oak Street offers amentities like free transportation to and from appointments for seniors living within a 10-mile radius of the building, and a community room and activities for local older adults to use free-of-charge. Even better, Oak Street Health offers translation services for Spanish-speaking seniors and their families.
Oak Street Health is the only practice of the three we’ve rated that we’ve visited in person. Our tour found the office to be clean and well-organized. In addition, the entire office team was helpful, knowledgable and exceedingly kind.
More than any other, the reason this office makes it to #1 on our list is because office clinicians spend an average of 40 minutes with patients during consultations. Talk about empathetic, patient-directed care! We were blown away by our tour and interaction with the Oak Street Health team. #3 – Carolinas Health Care System Senior Care
Address: 101 E. W.T. Harris Blvd. Building 1000, Suite 1110, Charlotte, NC 28262
Be forewarned, Carolinas Health Care System Senior Care has little to no reviews available online – the only one we could find was negative. But, it is one of the largest senior care providers in the area with many physicians and providers on staff. We’re adding it to our list as individuals can select from a wide range of providers and services at a single location. And, this provider offers remote monitoring and support for individuals and their families suffering from dementia or other cognitive impairments.
The office is easy to access and located in close proximity to other medical providers on an Atrium Health campus. In addition, the office’s integration into the larger Atrium Health healthcare network means ready access and integration with healthcare providers throughout the greater Charlotte area. This comes in handy particular when multiple providers need access to a patient’s previous medical history.
